This course, from neuroscientist and equine behaviour consultant Dr Emma Lethbridge, aims to change the misinformation and damaging training that is rife within the equestrian world. Emma looks at how fear and trauma can affect the horse and how to resolve the resulting problems in a compassionate and welfare-focused way. You will benefit from a thorough understanding of how horses think and behave if they are frightened or traumatised as well as gaining useful practical skills to help you train and handle horses more effectively. The course consists of an in depth, asynchronous online course which explores the neuropsychology of fear and trauma, the effects of fear and trauma on the horse’s welfare and behaviour and practical, welfare orientated techniques for rehabilitating horses. This course consists of 5.5 hours of lectures and multiple-choice question assessments after each lecture to assess formative learning The initial part of the course provides the foundational knowledge necessary to develop trauma informed practise in horse training and rehabilitation, followed by instruction and practical assessment on trauma informed horse training. The second part of the Trauma-Informed Horse Trainer Certificate combines four online lectures and three live sessions to impart the knowledge necessary to safely and effectively rehabilitate horses in a trauma-informed manner using welfare and wellbeing prioritising techniques and skills. There are two assessments for part two of the course: a theoretical essay that assesses learning and the presentation of a practical case study which provides summative assessment opportunity to evaluate practical competency in the students This course is designed to be a level 4 equivalent, meeting the required descriptors for this.
